ZHIGANG LIU
RESEARCH ASSOCIATE
FACULTY OF MEDICINE, IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON
Zhigang is currently a Research Associate in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion and Reproduction at Imperial College London, mainly using metabolomics, microbiomics and bioinformatics to research on human gut microbiota co-metabolism and the potential mechanism of IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). Before coming to Imperial, Zhigang obtained his PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2016. During his PhD research, he established a metabolomics method to research into the biological effect of nanodrugs. Prior to PhD, Zhigang received training for his medical degree in Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from 2006 to 2011, where he studied full courses of basic, clinic and preventive medicine and had the clinical practice. Zhigang also got a certificate of Computer Network Engineer from the Education and Examination Centre of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China.
Zhigang employs chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and NMR metabolomics, 16S rRNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, a series of molecular biology techniques, together with bioinformatics for big data analysis to investigate metabolic interactions between host and the gut microbiota and explore functional roles of the gut microbiota in modulating host physiology.
Research interests: metabolomics, bioinformatics, microbiome, IBD, nanomedicine
